Welcome to the review of Penny's Big Breakaway, the latest creation from the talented team behind Sonic Mania. This 3D platformer is a heartfelt tribute to the golden age of platforming in the late '90s. 🎮

In Penny's Big Breakaway, you take control of the street performer Penny, who finds herself in an extraordinary situation when her yo-yo is transformed by a cosmic entity. Get ready for an exciting adventure as you navigate through over 11 vibrant and themed worlds, filled with challenges and excitement! 🌍

One of the standout features of Penny's Big Breakaway is its stunning visuals and energetic soundtrack. Each world is more visually stunning than the last, creating an immersive experience, accompanied by a soundtrack that keeps the action going. 🌈🎵

As you progress through the levels, Penny's enhanced yo-yo allows you to execute impressive movement-based combos that are incredibly satisfying. Jumping, swinging, rolling, and seamlessly transitioning into another combo with a twirl feels absolutely fantastic. However, combat can be a bit tricky, as accidentally triggering a dash while attacking can lead to some struggles. 💥

The level design in Penny's Big Breakaway is top-notch, offering players expertly crafted courses that perfectly complement Penny's skills. Navigating through obstacle courses at high speeds is a thrilling experience, with multiple paths to choose from. Additionally, searching for collectibles adds an extra layer of fun, unlocking extra-difficult bonus levels. Although the fixed camera occasionally discourages exploration, the winding trails and optimal route discoveries make up for it. 🏞️

Unfortunately, the gameplay experience is marred by a common issue seen in early 3D platformers: depth perception. Judging Penny's position accurately becomes a challenge, leading to frustrating failed jumps. Screen-crowding is another pesky problem, with the penguins that create excitement sometimes blocking the entire view. An annoying U.I. element also disrupts gameplay when close to a side mission, forcing blind leaps of faith. 🐧💢

Despite these significant drawbacks, Penny's Big Breakaway still shines in terms of level design and movement mechanics. However, it falls short of reaching its full potential as a 3D platformer due to the overwhelming number of bugs, depth-perception troubles, and screen-crowding issues. Nonetheless, it's a nostalgic adventure worth checking out for platforming enthusiasts.
