  - Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad 2: UFC 304 Fight Card Preview, odds, start time, date, location, Odds & Predictions

UFC 304 is fast approaching. The promotion’s next fight card, the UFC 304 pay-per-view, takes place on Saturday, July 27, at Co-op Live in Manchester, England. UFC 304 features two title fights at the top of the card. Both of those battles are rematches. In the main event, UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards faces Belal Muhammad. In the UFC 304 co-main event, interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall faces Curtis Blaydes.UFC 304 takes place at Co-op Live in Manchester, England. The main card streams on ESPN+ pay-per-view at 10:00 p.m. ET. The ESPN2 prelims begin at 8:00 p.m. ET and follow the ESPN+ streaming early prelims, which start at 6:15 p.m. ET.

Edwards has defended his crown twice since winning the UFC welterweight title in August 2022. Muhammad is the No. 2 fighter in the official UFC welterweight rankings heading into Saturday’s UFC 304 main event scrap. UFC is heading back to the U.K. for its latest PPV offering this weekend. The promotion lands in Manchester, England with a pair of title fights atop the marquee. The main event sees welterweight champion Leon Edwards looks to turn away top contender Belal Muhammad while interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall looks to do the same with Curtis Blaydes. It all goes down from the Co-op Live on Saturday night.Edwards has risen to prominence at 170 pounds thanks in large part to the head kick heard around the world. Edwards, who waited a lengthy time to finally get his crack at the welterweight title against Kamaru Usman, was down big on the scorecards in the final round of their 2022 clash. Then, Edwards landed a picture-perfect headkick that knocked Usman out cold to claim the title. Edwards went on to win their rematch in 2023 by decision and carries a 13-fight unbeaten streak into the rematch with Muhammad. The two originally met in 2021 when an inadvertent eye poke by Edwards left Muhammad unable to continue, leading to a no contest. Now, Muhammad looks to get his revenge after winning five in a row since that meeting. The co-main event carries a similar story. Interim champ Aspinall is looking for a bit of revenge of his own after suffering a knee injury just 15 seconds into the first meeting with Blaydes, leading to a TKO loss. It's the lone blemish on an otherwise immaculate UFC run for the British fighter. Blaydes, meanwhile, gets his first chance at gold after scoring a surprising knockout of rising contender Jailton Almeida in March. The undercard is loaded with British fighters looking to make a splash on their way up the ladder. That includes Paddy Pimblett as the lightweight tries to continue his ascent to a title shot when he faces veteran King Green. Plus, featherweight vet Arnold Allen hopes another strong showing can get him closer to that hallowed title opportunity when he faces dynamic striker Giga Chikadze. Plus, Nathaniel Wood, Molly McCann and Muhammad Mokaev all look to add to their highlight reels.

Below is the complete fight card for UFC 304 along with the latest odds. Check back all week long for the latest news, features and other content around this massive event.

- Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad: First Fight Recap

When Edwards and Muhammad first met, it was in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card from the Apex in March 2021. At the time, Edwards was on an eight-fight winning streak, while Muhammad had won four in a row. Edwards entered the contest as the No. 3 fighter in the UFC welterweight rankings and a -270 betting favorite, Muhammad was ranked at No. 13 and the +220 betting underdog.

The bout did not last long, ending early in the second round because of a nasty eye poke from Edwards, but there were some notable takeaways from the 5:18 of fight time.Edwards established control of the pace and space of the fight early. He used forward pressure to force Muhammad onto his back foot while also putting Muhammad’s back to the fence. The higher-ranked fighter mixed up his targets and techniques and showed that he was unafraid to engage Muhammad in the clinch, where Muhammad was thought to have an advantage. Edwards also scored a big head kick that wobbled Muhammad early in the first round. After that, Edwards did an admirable job of mixing things up. He switched stances well and did more damage with his strikes.

Edwards landed 48 percent of his significant strikes in that contest, while Muhammad landed 30 percent. While Muhammad concentrated on head strikes (87 percent) and landed a few body blows (12 percent) but zero leg kicks, Edwards mixed up his targets (53 percent to the head, 26 percent to the body, and 21 percent to the legs).

-Careers Leon Edwards

Leon Edwards (22-3-0-1) joined the UFC in late 2014. He was 8-1 at the time and coming off a successful defense of the BAMMA British welterweight title.

Edwards dropped his UFC debut, losing a split decision to Claudio Silva in November 2014. He then scored a knockout win and a “Performance of the Night” bonus against Seth Baczynski. A decision victory over Pawel Pawlak followed.

In December 2015, Edwards faced Kamaru Usman on the early prelims of a UFC on Fox card. Usman won that contest by unanimous decision. That fight, which took place more than eight years ago, was the last time Edwards was on the losing end of a UFC contest.

Following his loss to Usman, Edwards picked up wins over Dominic Waters (decision), Albert Tumenov (submission), Vicente Luque (decision), and Bryan Barberena (decision). The victory over Barberena, which came on the main card of a September 2017 UFC Fight Night event in Rotterdam, earned Edwards the No. 15 spot in the welterweight rankings.

After that, Edwards went on a four-fight winning streak, picking up three decision wins and one TKO. That stretch of wins put him at No. 3 in the rankings. Edwards was initially booked to face former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in March 2020, but Edwards, who fights out of England, was forced to withdraw from that event due to COVID-19 restrictions after the card was moved from the UK to the US. The event was eventually scrapped. After the Woodley fight was canceled, Edwards wanted to fight Jorge Masvidal, someone ranked ahead of him or for the UFC welterweight crown. With none of those fights being offered to him, Edwards was inactive. That inactivity resulted in the UFC removing him from the rankings, something he did not take well.

One day after the UFC removed Edwards from the rankings, the promotion announced Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev for a UFC Fight Night event in December 2020. With that booking, the UFC put Edwards back into the rankings at No. 3. That fight never took place as both fighters tested positive for COVID. Chimaev then pulled out of the rebooked fight because of lingering COVID effects. The UFC tried to book the bout again, but Chimaev was again forced out because he was still dealing with COVID issues. With that, the UFC booked the Edwards vs. Muhammad contest discussed above.

A decision win over Nate Diaz at UFC 263 in June 2021 followed for Edwards, which set up Edwards vs. then-champion Usman for the welterweight title in March 2023. Edwards. Behind on all three scorecards as the clock ticked down, Edwards delivered a perfectly placed and timed head kick that dropped Usman to the mat at 4:04 of the final round. With that, Edwards captured UFC gold.Edwards defeated Usman in the March 2023 rematch by majority decision. He then defended the title in December 2023 with a unanimous decision win over Colby Covington.Edwards is unbeaten in 13 fights.

- Belal Muhammad

Belal Muhammad (23-3-0-1) joined the UFC in 2016. His record was 9-0 at the time, with six decision wins and three knockouts. When the UFC signed him, he was coming off a victory for the inaugural Titan FC welterweight title Muhammad did not find immediate success in the UFC. In his debut, he lost to Alan Jouban, bounced back with a TKO over Augusto Montano, and was knocked out by Vicente Luque in his third promotional outing.Muhammad followed the Luque setback with four straight decision wins. That run of victories ended in January 2019 when Geoff Neal defeated Muhammad by unanimous decision on the early prelims of a UFC Fight Night card in Brooklyn, New York.Muhammad responded to that loss with three wins.

The third victory during that run, a decision win over Lyman Good, launched him into the welterweight rankings at No. 13. A February 2021 decision win over Dhiego Lima followed the Good win, and set Muhammad up to face Edwards for the first time.

Since the no contest bout against Edwards, Muhammad has won five straight. His wins during that stretch are over Demian Maia (decision), Stephen Thompson (decision), Vicente Luque (decision), Sean Brady (TKO) and most recently Gilbert Burns the co-main event of the UFC 288 pay-per-view card in May 2023.Muhammad is unbeaten in 10 fights.

- UFC 304 Betting Odds: Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad 2

When the UFC announced Edwards vs. Muhammad 2 for the UFC 304 PPV card, Edwards was the -298 betting favorite over Muhammad, who opened as the +240 betting underdog. Those odds have shifted a bit. Edwards is now -275, and Muhammad is +190.

Significant Stats

The UFC welterweight champ averages 2.75 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy of 53 percent. Edwards absorbs 2.34 significant strikes per minute with a defense of 54 percent. The champ picks up an average of 1.25 takedowns per 15 minutes and succeeds on 34 percent of his takedown attempts. Edwards has a takedown defense of 70 percent. The title challenger lands 4.55 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy of 43 percent. Muhammad has a striking defense of 57 percent and he absorbs 3.64 significant strikes per minute. Muhammad lands 1.98 takedowns per 15 minutes with an accuracy of 35 percent. His takedown defense is an outstanding 93 percent.

Muhammad has not attempted a takedown in his past two fights.

- UFC 304: Edwards vs. Muhammad 2 - Prediction and Pick

When analyzing the progress of these two fighters since their first meeting, Edwards has made more improvements to his overall fight game. He’s added small pieces to his arsenal, developed his fight IQ, become more trusting of his coaches, and more comfortable and confident with his abilities inside the Octagon. Not one thing stands out about Edwards’s game, but he is good at everything. He has no glaring weaknesses, and it’s hard to find an area an opponent can exploit when it comes to the UFC welterweight champion. That’s not to say Muhammad has stagnated as a fighter since these two first competed, but he is not as well-rounded as the champ. He is a strong wrestler who might have relied too much on his striking in his past few fights. Attempting to engage Edwards in a striking battle in the open, or even in close, will be a mistake when it comes to UFC 304’s main event. The betting pick for the UFC 304 headliner is for Edwards to defeat Muhammad by decision.

Breaking News in the MMA World: Ostarine Scandals, UFC Rule Changes, and Big Fight Previews

Mixed Martial Arts fans have been buzzing with the latest developments in the sport. From shocking revelations about Ostarine contamination to crucial UFC rule changes and exciting fight previews, there's no shortage of action. Let's dive into the biggest stories making headlines right now.

The Ostarine Controversy

Sha Om Ali’s Suspension and New Findings

Back in 2018, Sha Om Ali faced a major setback when he was suspended for six months after testing positive for Ostarine, a performance-enhancing drug. Despite none of his supplements testing positive at the time, officials concluded contamination was the likely cause. Fast forward to now, and Om Ali shared groundbreaking news on his YouTube channel: recent studies suggest Ostarine can transfer through sweat. Scientists confirmed it by testing knee braces that athletes shared, proving that these substances can be exchanged through sweat.

Om Ali received a text from UFC's Jeff Nitzky about these new findings. Initially dreading bad news, he was relieved and excited to read the article confirming his theories.

Community Response

Conor McGregor didn’t take long to react, posting a laughing emoji. Om Ali fired back, reminiscing about the old Conor and critiquing his recent one-win-four-loss record. Despite the banter, Om Ali remained respectful, expressing excitement to watch McGregor fight again.

On social media, Jeff Nitzky supported Om Ali’s claims, emphasizing how easily detectable Ostarine is and stressing the importance of threshold levels in anti-doping measurements. This revelation brings to light potential implications for athletes like Ryan Garcia, who is challenging a year-long suspension for Ostarine.

UFC Rule Changes

Removal of 12-to-6 Elbow Rule

The UFC has officially removed the prohibition against 12-to-6 elbows. This rule, which led to Jon Jones’ only career loss in 2009, will no longer hinder fighters. The change allows fighters more versatility in their techniques and strategies.

Revised Definition of a Grounded Fighter

Under the new rule, fighters who touch the canvas with their hands to avoid knees can now be struck. Only when a knee or any other body part hits the canvas is a fighter considered grounded. This change is set to revolutionize fight defense strategies.

Community Reactions

Ariel Helwani shared insights on these changes, highlighting how judges and officials are training to adapt to the new rules. The MMA community had mixed reactions: some welcomed the changes, while others urged the commissions to address more pressing issues like extreme weight cutting.

Homeg Guard Games' website offers pre-order incentives and significantly discounted prices for different game editions. The CTO, Pavl Plev, and several other employees have worked at Arctos Entertainment, and the lead game designer, Dimitri Nikulin, was involved in several of their projects, including War Z, which was criticized for being a scam. TOP 15 Best Online Co-Op Games On PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium

TOP 15 Best Online Co-Op Games On PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium July 2024

 - Sony's PlayStation Plus Extra subscription offers a wide variety of games to cater to different preferences. From lengthy RPGs like Dragon Quest 11 to shorter action games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and competitive multiplayer titles like For Honor, there's something for everyone. The service also includes a selection of co-op games that are perfect for playing with friends. Whether you prefer local co-op or online play, PlayStation Plus has got you covered. Check out the best online co-op games available on PS Plus this month!

15 - World War Z

Even though PS Plus Extra's World War Z loses points for being just the base game rather than the superior Aftermath upgrade, the third-person shooter is still a decent option for anyone looking to demolish thousands of zombies alongside a few friends. Push comes to shove, Zombie Army 4 is the superior experience since it features a more enjoyable and over-the-top story; nevertheless, Saber Interactive's project is polished, entertaining, and well worth a playthrough if a group of friends are craving a small change of pace for their next play session.World War Z is one of those releases that is difficult to passionately recommend to solo players, even though it supports the feature. The game is intended to be experienced as part of a team, and a single-player run can become dull quickly. However, multiplayer enhances the gameplay's value, justifying a playthrough. Fans of the World War Z book or movie might also enjoy jumping into the universe, although the game does not have much to do with either property.

14 - Payday 2 Crimewave Edition .

In 2023, Payday 2 celebrated its 10-year anniversary, and the co-op shooter is still as popular as ever. The game has a simple but brilliant premise: team up with friends to pull off heists. It is possible to take on missions solo, but Payday 2 is intended to be experienced with a consistent group of friends.

The progression system revolves around unlocking better gear and skills, both of which play significant roles in enhancing a crew's professionalism. Consequently, players genuinely feel like they are improving with each new heist as their crew gradually morphs into a well-oiled machine.

13 - Killing Floor 2

PS Plus Extra has a few co-op games capable of scratching someone's "blast zombies in the face" itch, and Killing Floor 2 compares favorably with any of its peers. Despite being fairly old by this point, the 2016 release holds up well thanks to its enjoyably over-the-top core gameplay loop along with a surprisingly addictive progression system. The campaign guides teams through a series of levels filled with wave after wave of enemies.

Killing Floor 2's gameplay loop is not complicated, and it is arguably simpler than games like Left 4 Dead; however, it is complemented by Perks that essentially serve as classes. Coming with unique abilities and weapons, each Perk can be leveled up, which adds a lot of replayability to the package. Killing Floor 2 supports up to 6 players simultaneously, and this is one of those games that simply needs to be experienced in co-op. Technically, single-player is an option, and while not unplayable, it is not great either.

12 - Demon's Souls (2020)

FromSoftware's Souls games incorporate a unique form of multiplayer that enables players to visit each other's worlds, and the Demon's Souls remake is no exception. Depending on the item used, players can either invade and engage in PvP or be summoned to provide a helping hand. While the former tends to get more attention, the latter is also a common practice.

Up to four players can convene to take on the game's plethora of challenging fights, with the helpers being sent back to their universes if they die or take down a boss. It should be noted that while co-op is ongoing, two invaders can also show up to add a PvP twist to the tale, so players should always be on their toes.

11 - Outriders

Ah, Outriders – a game that attracted plenty of hype before its debut but faded into the shadows fairly quickly after launch. Reminiscent of AA projects of old (which can be said for most People Can Fly games), this sci-fi looter shooter is the definition of a mixed bag. The third-person gunplay is explosive, aggressive, and reasonably customizable thanks to solid weapon selection. When focusing solely on combat, Outriders is generally a fun but derivative time; unfortunately, the rest of the game can be a drag. The story has some interesting ideas but does not bring them together in a way that takes full advantage of their potential, resulting in a simultaneously confusing and forgettable plot. Although improving after launch, the endgame is not particularly rewarding and falls into repetition way too quickly.

While still present, those negatives become mostly minor inconveniences when Outriders is played in co-op. Allowing three players to experience the campaign together, the game's class system really shines when teams create builds that complement each other, which is not that difficult to do. The visceral action benefits from the added mayhem afforded by larger firefights, alleviating an entertaining system to even higher heights. Honestly, Outriders is worth a playthrough for solo players craving a decent third-person shooter; however, it is almost a must-play as a PS Plus co-op game.

10- Darksiders Genesis

Darksiders has led such a strange existence. Each entry tackles a different subgenre of action-adventure games, with some even venturing into RPG territory. Darksiders Genesis marks the franchise's biggest departure to date, as the spin-off is a top-down hack and slash akin to something like Victor Vran. The game is also clearly meant to be experienced in co-op since it features two playable Horsemen: Strife and War. Solo players can swap between the two at will, which generally means they pick War when melee combat is the focus and then switch to Strife for ranged damage In local or online co-op, two players take charge of either Strife or War, allowing the powerful Horsemen to rain havoc simultaneously. Although they do not sync up all that much, Darksiders Genesis' characters are both fairly deep and offer a good range of loadout options to keep things interesting throughout the campaign. Since couch co-op utilizes a restrictive split-screen, online multiplayer is the better option in this case.

9 - Trine 4  The Nightmare Prince

Frozenbyte's Trine is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for co-op-driven action-platformer games. All the franchise's titles are worth seeking out, however, PS Plus subscribers will need to settle for Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince. Despite the number in its title, this entry can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of its predecessors, so newcomers can start here.Trine 4 follows three heroes (a mage, thief, and knight) as they go on an epic fantasy-laden adventure that tests their might and teamwork. While not devoid of combat, the campaign focuses on puzzles and platforming, with the former requiring creative use of the characters' abilities. In solo runs, players can switch between the characters with the click of a button; in co-op, each user takes charge of one hero. Trine 4 features two modes: Classic and Unlimited. The former ties three players to specific heroes, while the latter allows four users to swap to any character whenever they want.

8 -Zombie Army 4: Dead War

Another zombie shooter akin to something like Left 4 Dead or Back 4 Blood, Zombie Army 4: Dead War is for those people who prefer a third-person perspective. Even though the game does not quite have the same name recognition as either of those projects, it is a respectable entry in the subgenre. As is always the case, four players can join forces to blast their way through fairly self-contained levels filled with a colorful and grotesque assortment of flesh-eaters.Zombie Army 4 shakes things up by being set after World War 2 and granting a Nazi coat of paint to its armies of the walking dead. This setting is the element that distinguishes the game the most from its peers, and the campaign makes good use of the premise. Zombie Army 4 guides players through an over-the-top and entertaining story that is long enough to feel substantial without overstaying its welcome. Along with a decent selection of weapons, Dead War uses a rewarding perk system that adds some flavor to combat.

7 - The Crew 2

An April 2024 PlayStation Plus addition, The Crew 2 might not seem like an obvious recommendation at first. For one, Ubisoft's game was not particularly well received at launch, even if it was largely considered to be an improvement over its predecessor. As a sequel, The Crew Motorfest, launched in 2023, the 2018 release is now old news and unlikely to attract all that many new players, especially since it has been steeply discounted over the years. Taking all these things into account, The Crew 2 seems destined to be forgotten, just a name on an expansive list of PS Plus online co-op games; however, as far as open-world racers are concerned, this title is far from bad, especially when played with a few other people. After all these years, The Crew 2's community has dwindled significantly, which can be a death sentence for an online-driven project like this. Fortunately, the game is at its best when a group of friends make plans to join the same world, an option that is still available today. Along with competing in races, The Crew 2 has quite a few team-based events that emphasize multiplayer. Consequently, co-op is required to experience everything this title has to offer.

6 - Back 4 Blood

Back 4 Blood is a first-person co-op shooter reminiscent of Left 4 Dead. Turtle Rock's project wears its influences on its sleeve, which is hardly a terrible thing considering the market is not flooded with these sorts of titles. Back 4 Blood has solid gameplay and visuals, along with a card-based customization system that permits players to tweak their loadouts. The differences between Back 4 Blood's playable survivors are not skin-deep either. Each character has unique traits and default weapons, which encourages teams to craft parties consisting of survivors that bring the best out of each other. Even though it is not a masterpiece and has had a fairly short lifespan for this type of project, Back 4 Blood is more than good enough to keep a group of friends engaged for a few hours.

5 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge .

They might not come around as often as they once did, but it is always an exciting day when a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game launches. And, in a nice change of pace from most of the franchise's post-2000s efforts, Shredder's Revenge is also great. Looking to recapture the Turtles' beat 'em up glory days, Tribute Games basically created a game ripped right out of the '90s, albeit with enough modern touches for it to come across as a loving homage rather than just an antiquated throwback. Up to six players can join forces to take on the Foot Clan, and they are free to pick from the Turtles, Master Splinter, April, and Casey Jones. Even at face value, that is a more than solid selection for this type of game, and that is before taking into account each character's unique traits. All the playable figures bring something fresh to the table, so even solo players can enjoy replaying the campaign by switching between the characters.Gameplay-wise, Shredder's Revenge sticks fairly close to the standard beat 'em up formula. The characters have a limited but satisfying moveset, and the levels pack a considerable punch. The boss fights are quite difficult and require mastery of the combat system's mechanics to overcome. The stages are overflowing with references to TMNT's past, and the nods cover many of the franchise's sides rather than just its gaming history.

4 - Returnal

Housemarque knows a thing or two about co-op. Dead Nation, Resogun, and Alienation all make good use of the feature, and they support both local and online connections. The developer's most recent project, Returnal, did not launch with multiplayer, but an online two-player co-op option was added as part of the Ascension update. Thanks to this addition, players can now join forces to take on the game's roguelike challenges, and there is the option to use a public or private server.Returnal is challenging, and co-op does not necessarily make the experience easier. However, it does introduce a revive option into the gameplay loop, granting players a second chance. Otherwise, co-op provides essentially the same core experience as solo runs, albeit with two Selenes rather than just one. As the base package is fantastic, the same can be said about Returnal's co-op.

3 - Warhammer , Vermintide 2

A popular first-person action game, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is celebrating its five-year anniversary in 2023. Despite its growing age, Fatshark's release is still reasonably active, and it is arguably the best action-oriented Warhammer game of the last decade. Vermintide 2 pits the Heroes of Ubersreik against wave after wave of rat-themed enemies, showering them with loot if they manage to survive. While the vanilla version only has 13 missions (+4 from free updates), the stages are meant to be repeated endlessly as players upgrade their class and weapons. Vermintide 2's five playable characters are wildly different from each other, ensuring most people find someone who suits their preferences.

2 - Ghost Of Tsushima , Legends

Ghost of Tsushima is a fantastic action-adventure game with a robust single-player campaign. A few months following the base title's debut, Sucker Punch dropped Legends, a co-op side experience deep enough to justify a standalone release. Along with common modes like Survival, Legends also comes with a Story that guides two players through roughly 6 hours of content.Legends has four classes: Samurai, Ronin, Assasin, and Hunter. Each one fits an archetype and has a specific role they should be fulfilling in combat scenarios. While some options like the Samurai are viable for solo or two-player runs, classes like the Ronin are designed with support in mind. Legends might just be the best PS Plus online co-op game.

1 - Monster Hunter Rise

PS Plus Extra's June 2024 lineup contained a range of online co-op options (two Lego games, Far Cry 4, Anno 1800, and Police Simulator: Patrol Officers), including a headline act that is synonymous with teamwork. Sure, Monster Hunter Rise can be played and enjoyed solo for 100+ hours without much issue; however, the game pushes its co-op element, something that can be said for most entries in Capcom's franchise. Now, Rise has two types of quests: Village and Hub. The former are single-player only and, in total, last about 10 hours. While a bit too easy for veterans, these quests serve as an introduction for newcomers, teaching them the basic skills they will need to stand a chance in the harder missions. Once someone gets through the Village quests or feels confident in their abilities, they should head to the Hub to try out its many hunts, which are far harder and can be played in co-op.Rise handles its co-op brilliantly, making it as easy as possible for friends to team up while removing some of the more frustrating elements in Monster Hunter World. Parties can try to synergize their builds to create a well-rounded team; alternatively, they can simply go with their preferred loadout and ignore everything else. As the Hub quests can take quite a long time to complete, co-op makes them easier to digest and arguably more enjoyable.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is a fun and accessible game with a Soulslite vibe

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn Review – Accessible and Fun Soulslite

A44, the Wellington-based game developer, is gearing up to release its second game, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, almost five years after the debut of Ashen. While Ashen was initially an Xbox/PC exclusive published by indie label Annapurna Interactive, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is set to have a broader launch on multiple platforms right from the start with publisher Kepler Interactive. A44 has also expanded its team, growing from 30 to 60 developers, although this is still considered relatively small for a studio aiming to create a game approaching triple-A production standards.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn follows in the footsteps of its predecessor in many ways but also departs from it in others. It's still largely inspired by the Soulslike genre created by FromSoftware, so you can expect bonfire-like Lodestones and camps as checkpoints, having only one chance to gather your lost experience (called reputation here) if you are defeated before it is gone forever, and a set amount of potions that only recharges after resting at camps; which, however, respawns all regular foes in the world.

However, it is much more accessible for those who, like myself, aren't too keen on standard Soulslikes. To start with, A44 did not shy away from adding a difficulty selection, unlike FromSoftware. While the mere mention of it may sound borderline heretical to diehard fans of Dark Souls and Elden Ring, the Japanese studio's refusal to allow easier settings in their games keeps a good chunk of would-be fans from enjoying those titles. There's a reason why the 'easy' (or rather, normal) difficulty mods are extremely popular on PC, while console users are forced to go through the ordeal as-is or simply walk away.

No such thing is necessary in Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, which offers three options when starting a new game: Story (which disables Achievements), Normal (described as balanced but challenging), and Possessed, which delivers something more akin to the punishing experience Souls fans have come to love and hate at once. But there's more: players can also fast travel at will and without any cost to any unlocked Lodestone or camp.

Overall, when playing on Normal, I felt none of the trademark frustration usually tied to the experience of playing a Soulslike game. Granted, there were a few tougher boss fights and enemies that required some tactical adjustments to be overcome, but that's par for the course for any action RPG like God of War, which is also an inspiration for this game. In the review guide, A44 mentioned the desire to position Flintlock as an entry point for the genre that prides itself on not being unfair to players. In this regard, the game passes with flying colors.

It's great that the game is so accessible. This way, players will have the chance to experience a truly unique fantasy world inspired by the rather niche titular Flintlock genre. In this type of setting, firearms and black powder are just as prevalent as magical beings, and that's exactly what you'll find here.

Protagonist Nor Vanek (voiced by Olive Gray, who you might remember as Miranda Keyes in the Halo TV series) is a Sapper, trained since a young age (she was a war orphan) to be part of an elite combat engineering unit within The Coalition army. The Coalition is all that stands between the army of the Dead that has been pouring out of the city of Dawn for the past ten years. At the beginning of the game, his adoptive father, Baz (voiced by Elias Toufexis, known to gamers for playing Adam Jensen in the last two Deus Ex games), goes on a suicide mission with a couple more members of the Sapper unit to bomb the Door to the Great Below, in a desperate attempt to stop the flow of undead. Being highly protective of Nor, he leaves her behind - but she rushes to join the squad as soon as she learns of their endeavor.

The team does appear to succeed at blowing up the Door, but this creates new problems instead of fixing anything. Namely, a few nasty gods escape and cause all sorts of trouble throughout the world (which is a peculiar mix of Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Middle Easterner, and New Zealander influences). Furthermore, Nor herself is initially separated from the Sapper unit. However, she finds a new, mysterious companion, the fox-like god Enki (voiced by Alistair Petrie, mostly known for playing General Draven in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Despite her initial mistrust of any god, Nor eventually agrees to work with Enki to defeat those rampaging gods. By the way, if you're worried about Enki being as annoying as Forspoken's Cuff, I can reassure you that's not the case at all.

While not exactly full of twists, the story, told through conventional dialogue and cinematics rather than FromSoftware's cryptic ways, is ultimately enjoyable. Critically, the developers made the cast of supporting characters interesting despite only dedicating a modest amount of quest content to them. While I certainly support the definition of Soulslite for Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn when it comes to being a leaner, more accessible version of Soulslike, the game is perhaps a bit too 'light' on content in general.

A44 claimed a length of 20 hours plus another 10 for completionists, but Steam says I finished the game in just 14.7 hours, and the achievements confirm I completed all side quests, freed all hamlets, unlocked all firearms, found all Enki feathers (which level up your companion for better performance in combat), and fully upgraded my campsite. The side content was pretty good, but there was so little of it compared to the usual action RPG that it's hard not to be a little disappointed, particularly if you're having fun. Granted, the game has a budget price of $39.99, but you're still left wanting at the end.

That extends to character progression. You can obtain new armor and weapons (both melee and ranged), but there's only a handful of them throughout the entire game. The same goes for the skill tree, which lets you specialize in Steel (melee), Black Powder (Ranged), or Magic (gracefully provided by Enki), though you will most likely end up with a mix of all three, given how small the tree is. On the bright side, you can experiment with skills more easily than in other games, as Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn lets you 'unlearn' a skill while refunding a good amount of reputation to invest elsewhere.

Overall, the game's combat is relatively fast-paced and requires full usage of Nor Vanek's tools. For example, an unblockable (red) attack can be dodged, but a better option might be to use your trusty firearm, as that will stun the enemy for a brief time. There are also grenades and various types of firearms, including a cannon and a flamethrower.
Traversal is also pretty fun, taking advantage of a high degree of verticality in the design of the maps. The developers previously described it as Spider-Man-like, although I'm not sure that's accurate. In Spider-Man's games, you can move more or less freely while web-swinging, whereas here, you're just zipping in a predetermined path through magical rifts. Still, it's a good way to reach some secret areas and fully explore the world.

Visually, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn looks good without being mind-blowing. It is powered by Unreal Engine 4; an upgrade to UE5 could have done wonders for the game, not only for the visuals with the likes of Lumen and Nanite but mostly for the stuttering improvements introduced by Epic.

Unfortunately, the game suffers from the stuttering seen in many UE4 games released in the past two years. Mind you, it's not nearly as bad as The Callisto Protocol, but it's there, even when playing on a PC with an RTX 4090 and NVIDIA DLSS 3 enabled.
